I recently had the privilege of visiting and staying in several villages in Rajasthan, India. It was an amazing experience and a real eye opener. One of the things I noticed is that rooms and spaces are put to multiple uses. For example, a semi-open patio often found in the front yard of a house, easily doubles as an open-air kitchen sporting an in-built chulha or tandoori oven stove for cooking. As there no kitchen, and no kitchen sink, the sloping baked mud floor of the front yard, also doubles up as a place for washing the dishes. The slope helps to drain away the water into a nearby water drain, and the vessels that were washed, are left upside down to dry, right there on the floor nearby, until they need to be used, during the next dinner or mealtime.
